Summary

MAY THE VERSE BE WITH YOU!

Return once more to a galaxy far, far away with this sublime retelling of George Lucas's epic Star Wars in the style of the immortal Bard of Avon。 The saga of a wise (Jedi) knight and an evil (Sith) lord, of a beautiful princess held captive and a young hero coming of age, Star Wars abounds with all the valor and villainy of Shakespeare's greatest plays。 'Tis a tale told by fretful Droids, full of faithful Wookiees and fearsome Stormtroopers, signifying。。。 pretty much everything。

Reimagined in glorious iambic pentameter, William Shakespeare's Star Wars will astound and edify Rebels and Imperials alike。 Zounds! This is the book you're looking for。

My teenage son and I listened to the audio performance of Verily, A New Hope over the course of this week。 We listened to one act a night while we shot pool。 We were treated to a fantastic surprise。It made me cry, made him choke up, made us both laugh out loud, occasionally groan and roll our eyes, and sent us into post-listening discussions about our dream cast (of all the actors we know and have worked with) for a real life staging that Miloš wants to mount in Prince Edward Island sometime soo My teenage son and I listened to the audio performance of Verily, A New Hope over the course of this week。 We listened to one act a night while we shot pool。 We were treated to a fantastic surprise。It made me cry, made him choke up, made us both laugh out loud, occasionally groan and roll our eyes, and sent us into post-listening discussions about our dream cast (of all the actors we know and have worked with) for a real life staging that Miloš wants to mount in Prince Edward Island sometime soon。 We talked about how to make the FX work onstage, we imagined how to incorporate the Shakespearean monologues and soliloquys, we walked around quoting Ian Doescher's adapted lines。 We had a blast。 But most importantly, Verily, A New Hope reminded us both how magical both the original Star Wars movie and Shakespeare are: even if The Empire Strikes Back is a better film and our favourite playwrights aren't Shakespeare (Miloš' is Neil Simon); mine is [author:George Bernard Shaw), Star Wars can always make me smile, and Shakespeare can always make me shiver。 Those are some of the things we all go to films and plays to experience, so when someone reminds me to love and appreciate those works we take for granted, I just want to give that writer a hug。 Since I can't do that, though, I'll simply say thanks to the author: "Thank you, Ian。 You've done a marvellous thing with your adaptations, and we love you for it!" 。。。more

I'm not a big Star Wars fan (I know, I know), but listening to Episode 4 as done by Shakespeare was entertaining, particularly in audiobook form。 The R2D2 character with his asides were probably the best part。 I'm not a big Star Wars fan (I know, I know), but listening to Episode 4 as done by Shakespeare was entertaining, particularly in audiobook form。 The R2D2 character with his asides were probably the best part。 。。。more

I picked this up as a quick read and a silly joke。 I wasn't expecting a masterpiece。 The jokes, the style, the soliloquies, the beauty。 Amazing。 I picked this up as a quick read and a silly joke。 I wasn't expecting a masterpiece。 The jokes, the style, the soliloquies, the beauty。 Amazing。 。。。more

This was amazing。 C-3PO and R2-D2 are the ultimate Rude Mechanicals, and I NEED to see a live stage production of Verily, A New Hope。 Can't recommend the audiobook highly enough。 This was amazing。 C-3PO and R2-D2 are the ultimate Rude Mechanicals, and I NEED to see a live stage production of Verily, A New Hope。 Can't recommend the audiobook highly enough。 。。。more

Great stuff。 Couldn't put it down。 I highly recommend the audiobook version to fans of Shakespeare, Star Wars, Joseph Campbell, or all of the above。 If you're none of the above, I still recommend it。 You still might just come out of it with new appreciation for all of them, especially if you had a cool high school English teacher who gave some sort of assignment on the hero's journey。 (I also recommend Star Wars Episode X written by AI on YouTube。 It's long, but totally worth it。 I laughed so ha Great stuff。 Couldn't put it down。 I highly recommend the audiobook version to fans of Shakespeare, Star Wars, Joseph Campbell, or all of the above。 If you're none of the above, I still recommend it。 You still might just come out of it with new appreciation for all of them, especially if you had a cool high school English teacher who gave some sort of assignment on the hero's journey。 (I also recommend Star Wars Episode X written by AI on YouTube。 It's long, but totally worth it。 I laughed so hard, I cried。) 。。。more

Lots of fun to pick out the references to various Bill plays and hear how the author has framed familiar SW dialogue, which many can quote from memory。 I particularly liked the John Wayne-esque Han Solo!

Meh。 It was ok as a quick read。 Will I read it again? No。 Did I enjoy it? Sort of。 I think my favorite parts consisted of R2-D2 speaking actual words in his asides。

If you like Star Wars and you like English literature, then this book is worth a try。 It is extremely well-written and the author is well-researched in both worlds。

This is so good! I love this project! Ian Doescher continues to combine Shakespearan prose and Star Wars lore so seamlessly it just seems like it was always meant to be。 Favorite scenes transformed into familiar iambic pentameter (hello Romeo and Juliet AND Hamlet references!) and the added monologues to show the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker's continued push and pull with the Dark Side just make for a great read。 Loved this retelling! This book is built around a cute idea, but once you get past that basic gimmick of retelling the first Star Wars movie in iambic pentameter -- "In time so long ago begins our play / In star-crossed galaxy far, far away" and so on -- there aren't a whole lot of particularly original spins on the material。 Debut author Ian Doescher presents the familiar script as a stageplay in faux-Elizabethan English (to mixed effect for some of the more cinematic moments reduced to exposition from a chorus), an This book is built around a cute idea, but once you get past that basic gimmick of retelling the first Star Wars movie in iambic pentameter -- "In time so long ago begins our play / In star-crossed galaxy far, far away" and so on -- there aren't a whole lot of particularly original spins on the material。 Debut author Ian Doescher presents the familiar script as a stageplay in faux-Elizabethan English (to mixed effect for some of the more cinematic moments reduced to exposition from a chorus), and although he includes plenty of nods at real Shakespeare lines, they generally come across as mere word-replacement reference humor rather than anything especially clever, a la Luke's declaiming at the Rebel briefing, "And citizens in Bespin now abed, / shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here。" The scansion of the meter works throughout, but the expected sort of sparkling figurative language, the wry and raunchy wordplay that makes the Bard's work so engaging, is fairly sparse。I think my favorite part of this text would be the audience asides that the writer has added in, including a few Puckish soliloquies in which R2-D2 breaks from his accustomed beeps and bloops to share his thoughts about his companions with us plainly。 And it is the same great story as ever, presented in an admittedly fun new fashion。 But overall, this strikes me as an experiment which doesn't entirely succeed and ultimately overstays its welcome。 I don't feel I need to check out any of the franchise sequel and prequel versions (or unrelated titles like Get Thee Back to the Future or Much Ado about Mean Girls) that Doescher has subsequently produced。Find me on Patreon | Goodreads | Blog | Twitter 。。。more
